FRITZ!Box Login

AVM's FRITZ!Box is the dominant home router in Germany and Austria, and widely used across Europe. If you're encountering one for the first time, there are two things that stand out immediately: the admin address is fritz.box (not an IP address, and not a real internet domain — just a local hostname), and the IP is 192.168.178.1 — an unusual subnet that most other brands don't use.

The admin interface is in German by default if the OS language is German, and English otherwise (or switchable). FRITZ!Box firmware — called FRITZ!OS — is updated regularly and adds significant new features, not just security patches. The latest FRITZ!OS versions support Wi-Fi 6, mesh networking with FRITZ!Repeaters, a built-in DECT phone base station (on DSL models), and a surprisingly full-featured NAS with FRITZ!NAS file sharing.

How to Log In

  1. Connect to the FRITZ!Box WiFi or via ethernet
  2. Open a browser and type http://fritz.box in the address bar
  3. If fritz.box doesn't resolve, use http://192.168.178.1
  4. Username: admin
  5. Password: the password printed on the label (look for "FRITZ!Box-Kennwort" or "Password" on the sticker)
  6. The FRITZ!OS dashboard loads — shows internet status, phone calls, mesh overview, and device connections

FRITZ!Box Features Worth Knowing

FRITZ!Box is unusual in how much it does compared to typical routers at similar price points:

  • FRITZ!Mesh — Add FRITZ!Repeaters for whole-home coverage. They auto-configure via a mesh setup button — no manual pairing needed.
  • DECT base station — DSL models include a built-in DECT base that works with FRITZ!Fon handsets and FRITZ!DECT smart home devices.
  • FRITZ!NAS — Plug a USB hard drive into the FRITZ!Box and it becomes a network-accessible file server visible on your local network.
  • MyFRITZ! — AVM's free service for accessing your FRITZ!Box remotely over the internet (VPN or FRITZ!App Fern).
  • Automatic firmware updates — Opt-in automatic FRITZ!OS updates, rare among consumer routers.
