192.168.178.1 — FRITZ!Box Router Login
About 192.168.178.1
192.168.178.1 is the default gateway IP for all AVM FRITZ!Box routers — a unique address that AVM chose to avoid collisions with the 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.0.1 addresses used by other manufacturers. AVM also provides the hostname fritz.box as a more memorable alternative: the FRITZ!Box intercepts DNS lookups for fritz.box locally and redirects to the admin panel, so typing fritz.box in any browser on the local network works regardless of whether you know the IP.
FRITZ!Box runs FRITZ!OS, one of the most feature-complete home router operating systems available. It integrates WiFi, DECT telephony, DECT smart home control, VPN, media server, NAS, and home automation into a single unified interface — all far beyond what most consumer routers offer.

How to Log In
- Connect to your FRITZ!Box network via WiFi or Ethernet
- Open a browser and go to fritz.box or 192.168.178.1
- Enter the FRITZ!Box password from the label on the device (not your WiFi password — a separate "FRITZ!Box Kennwort" / "FRITZ!Box password")
- The FRITZ!OS dashboard opens showing network overview, connected devices, and internet connection status
FRITZ!OS Interface — What's Inside
Home Network → Network — All connected devices with IP addresses and MAC addresses. Set static IP assignments (IP reservations) here. The network map shows wired vs wireless connections and signal strength.
Home Network → Wireless (WLAN) — WiFi name and password for 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz (on 6E models). Guest network settings. WPA3 toggle. Scheduled WiFi shutoff. Band steering (called "Wi-Fi network mode").
Internet → Permit Access — Port forwarding (called "port sharing" in FRITZ!OS), dynamic DNS, and IPv6 firewall rules. More flexible than most consumer routers.
Internet → MyFRITZ! Account — Free AVM remote access service. Gives your box a permanent internet hostname (yourdevice.myfritz.net) and enables remote admin panel access, remote file access (FRITZ!NAS), and VPN.
Telephony — FRITZ!Box natively supports VoIP (SIP) phone lines and DECT cordless phones. Configure phone numbers, answering machine, fax, and call blocking. Unique to FRITZ!Box among consumer routers.
Smart Home — FRITZ!DECT smart plugs, radiator thermostats, door sensors, and DECT buttons are controlled directly through FRITZ!OS. No third-party hub or cloud required.
System → FRITZ!OS Update — Firmware update check and auto-update scheduling. AVM maintains firmware updates for FRITZ!Box models for many years — models from 2016 still receive security patches in 2026.
VPN on FRITZ!Box
FRITZ!Box includes a built-in VPN server — no separate hardware or paid service required. Two protocols are supported:
WireGuard (recommended) — Available on all current FRITZ!Box models. Configured under Internet → Permit Access → VPN (WireGuard). FRITZ!OS generates a QR code for phone setup and a config file for computers. Fast, modern, and simple.
IPSec/IKEv2 — Legacy protocol for compatibility with older clients. Configure under Internet → Permit Access → VPN (IPSec). Requires MyFRITZ! for remote hostname unless you have a static IP.
FRITZ!Mesh — Whole-Home WiFi
FRITZ!Box routers and FRITZ!Repeaters support AVM's FRITZ!Mesh system. The main FRITZ!Box acts as the mesh master. Add FRITZ!Repeaters by pressing the WPS button on both devices — they auto-negotiate backhaul and join the mesh. All nodes appear in Home Network → Mesh. Wired Ethernet backhaul is supported for maximum performance by connecting repeaters via Ethernet to the main box.
The mesh shares a single WiFi name across all nodes. FRITZ!OS handles device roaming automatically based on signal strength.
Troubleshooting
fritz.box not loading: This hostname only resolves from inside your FRITZ!Box network. If you are on a different network (e.g., connected to a secondary router behind the FRITZ!Box), fritz.box may not resolve. Use 192.168.178.1 directly instead.
FRITZ!Box behind another router: If your FRITZ!Box is in IP client mode (set up behind a main router), its IP is assigned by the outer router's DHCP and is no longer 192.168.178.1. Check the outer router's connected devices list to find the current FRITZ!Box IP.
Forgot password: Factory reset by holding the reset button for 10 seconds. After reset, use the password printed on the device label.
FRITZ!OS in German: If you bought a German-market FRITZ!Box, the interface defaults to German. Go to System → Sprache und Region (Language and Region) to switch to English — though not all languages are available on all regional firmware builds.
