How to Reset Router to Factory Settings

Resetting your router restores all settings to factory defaults. This is useful when you forgot the password or experiencing issues.

How to Reset Router

  1. Locate Reset button on router (usually on back or bottom)
  2. Use paperclip or pin to press Reset button
  3. Hold button for 10-15 seconds
  4. Release when LEDs blink or flash
  5. Wait 2-3 minutes for complete restart
  6. Router is now reset to factory defaults
Warning: Factory reset erases ALL settings including WiFi name, password, port forwarding, and all custom configurations. Only reset if necessary.

TP-Link

Reset button on back. Hold 10 seconds until LEDs blink. Default: 192.168.0.1, admin/admin

Reset button on back. Hold 7-10 seconds until Power LED blinks. Default: 192.168.1.1, admin/password

Linksys

Reset button on back. Hold 10 seconds. Default: 192.168.1.1, admin/admin

D-Link

Pinhole reset button. Hold 10 seconds. Default: 192.168.0.1, admin/(blank)

ASUS

Reset button on back. Hold 5-10 seconds. Default: 192.168.1.1, admin/admin

Belkin

Reset button on back. Hold 10-15 seconds. Default: 192.168.2.1, (blank)/(blank)

After Reset - Setup Steps

  1. Connect to default WiFi network (check router label)
  2. Access router at default IP address
  3. Login with default credentials
  4. Change admin password immediately
  5. Set new WiFi network name (SSID)
  6. Create strong WiFi password
  7. Configure security settings (WPA2/WPA3)
  8. Set up any additional features needed
  9. Reconnect all devices

Alternative: Soft Reset (Restart)

If you just want to restart router without erasing settings:

  1. Unplug power cable from router
  2. Wait 10-30 seconds
  3. Plug power cable back in
  4. Wait 2-3 minutes for complete restart

This restarts router without resetting settings.

Find Default Settings After Reset

After reset, check these for default info:

  • Sticker on router bottom or back
  • Router manual or documentation
  • Manufacturer website
  • Common defaults by brand (see above)

Troubleshooting Reset

Reset Not Working

  • Hold button longer (up to 30 seconds)
  • Make sure router is powered on
  • Try different paperclip or pin
  • Check if you're pressing correct button
  • Unplug and replug power while holding reset

Can't Access After Reset

  • Wait full 3 minutes after reset
  • Connect directly via ethernet
  • Check default IP from router label
  • Forget and reconnect to WiFi network
