NETGEAR Router Login
NETGEAR is one of the few router brands with its own memorable login URL — routerlogin.net — instead of a bare IP address. Type that into your browser's address bar (not the search box), and your router intercepts the request locally and loads the admin panel. No DNS lookup, no internet required. If routerlogin.net doesn't respond, fall back to the IP address 192.168.1.1 directly.
The part that catches people: NETGEAR changed their default password policy. Routers manufactured before roughly 2020 use the universal default admin / password. Newer models — most of the current Nighthawk AX and RAX series — ship with a unique password printed on the router label instead. If you've been typing "password" and getting rejected, flip the router over and look for a sticker. The admin password will be listed separately from the WiFi password.
Default Credentials by Generation
| Router Generation | Username | Password | Example Models |
|---|---|---|---|
| Current (2020+) | admin | Unique — printed on label | RAX50, RAX70, RAX120, RS700 |
| Nighthawk WiFi 5 | admin | password | R7000, R7800, R8000, R9000 |
| Orbi Mesh (all) | admin | password | RBK50, RBK752, RBK852 |
| AC Routers | admin | password | R6700, R6900, AC1750 |
| Cable Gateways | admin | password | C7000, C7800, CAX80 |
How to Log In
- Connect your device to the NETGEAR WiFi, or use an ethernet cable into any of the router's LAN ports
- Open a browser and type
http://routerlogin.netin the address bar — not the search box - If that doesn't load, try
http://192.168.1.1(make sure it's http, not https) - Username: admin
- Password: password for older models, or the printed label password for newer ones
- Click Log In — you'll land on the NETGEAR Genie or Smart Dashboard
The admin interface varies by model age. Older routers (R7000 era) use NETGEAR Genie — a dark blue interface. Newer Nighthawk and RAX models use the Smart Dashboard with a cleaner white layout. Orbi has its own branded interface. All are reached at the same address.

Nighthawk App
The Nighthawk app handles everyday tasks without opening a browser, and works remotely over the internet — useful for checking on your network when you're away from home. It requires a free NETGEAR account.
- WiFi settings — Change SSID and password for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands separately
- Guest network — Enable and configure an isolated guest WiFi in seconds
- Connected devices — See every device on the network with name, IP, and connection type
- Pause internet — Cut access for specific devices instantly — handy for parental controls
- Speed test — Tests from the router itself, not limited by your device's hardware
- Firmware updates — Automatic notifications; one tap to install
Change WiFi Password
- Log in at routerlogin.net
- Go to Wireless in the left sidebar (or Basic → Wireless Setup on newer UI)
- Under Security Options, verify WPA2-PSK [AES] is selected — or WPA3 if all your devices support it
- Update the Passphrase field with your new password (8 characters minimum, 12+ recommended)
- Click Apply
- All connected devices will disconnect and need the new password to reconnect
If your router has separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks with different names, repeat these steps for each band. Newer routers with Smart Connect merge both into one SSID automatically.
Update Firmware
- Log in at routerlogin.net
- Go to ADVANCED tab → Administration → Firmware Update
- Click Check — NETGEAR's servers are queried for your model's latest release
- If an update is available, click Yes to download and install
- The router reboots automatically — takes 3–5 minutes. Do not unplug during this
routerlogin.net Not Working?
routerlogin.net uses DNS interception — the router's DHCP server tells your device to use the router for DNS, and the router returns its own IP when you look up routerlogin.net. If anything in that chain breaks, the hostname fails even though the router itself is fine. Switch to the IP address and the problem goes away.
| Problem | Fix |
|---|---|
| routerlogin.net won't load | Use http://192.168.1.1 — confirm it's http not https |
| routerlogin.net loads a wrong page | Cached DNS — try 192.168.1.1 or clear browser cache |
| "password" is rejected | Newer model — check label on bottom of router for admin password |
| Locked out after failed attempts | NETGEAR locks for 5 minutes — wait, then retry |
| Page loads but looks broken | Disable HTTPS-only mode in your browser for local addresses |
| 192.168.1.1 not reachable | Confirm you're connected to the NETGEAR WiFi, not a different network |
Factory Reset
A factory reset wipes all settings — WiFi name, passwords, port forwarding, everything — and returns the router to out-of-box state. Use it only when locked out with no other option.
- Locate the recessed reset button on the back or bottom of the router (requires a pin or paperclip)
- With the router powered on, press and hold the reset button for 10 seconds
- The power LED blinks amber — release the button
- Wait 90 seconds for the router to reboot fully
- Connect to the default WiFi (printed on the label) and log in with admin / password or the label password
