Important Security Notes
Change Default Password Immediately!
Default passwords are publicly known. Anyone can look them up online. Change both your WiFi password and router admin password after setup.
Why Change Default Password?
- Default passwords are not secure
- Anyone can find them online
- Neighbors could access your router
- Hackers target default credentials
- Protects your network and devices
What If Defaults Don't Work?
Password May Have Been Changed
If someone previously configured the router, defaults won't work. Try:
- Ask whoever set up the router
- Check if password was written down
- Look for password in device that's connected
- Factory reset router (last resort)
Wrong IP Address
Try alternative IP addresses:
Newer Router Models
Many newer routers (2018+) require you to create a password during initial setup:
- TP-Link: 2019+ models require password creation
- Netgear: Many new models use setup wizard
- ASUS: Recent models require custom password
If there's no default password, you must have set one during setup.
ISP-Provided Routers
Routers from internet providers often have unique passwords:
- Check device label (password printed on sticker)
- Check ISP documentation
- Contact ISP support for password
- Password often includes letters and numbers
After Logging In
- Change router admin password
- Change WiFi password
- Change network name (SSID)
- Enable WPA2 or WPA3 security
- Disable WPS if not needed
- Update router firmware
- Write down new passwords securely
